Is marine cargo insurance mandatory for imports into Kenya?
Yes. From February 2025, amendments to the Marine Insurance Act and the Insurance Act require all commercial imports to be insured locally by an IRA-licensed Kenyan insurer. Digital Marine Cargo Insurance (MCI) certificates are integrated with KRA customs systems, and clearance cannot proceed without one.
What does "warehouse to warehouse" cover mean?
Your cargo is covered from the moment it leaves the supplier's warehouse at origin until it arrives at your warehouse in Kenya, including loading and offloading risks, subject to the policy terms for your cargo category.
How is my premium calculated?
Premium is a percentage of your Sum Insured, where Sum Insured = Cost + Freight + Incidentals. The rate depends on the cargo category, packaging, shipping mode and whether the goods are new or used. What details do I need to request a quotation?
Importer name, KRA PIN, IDF number, BOF value and currency, country of origin, supplier, ports of loading and discharge, cargo description, HS code, container number, vessel and voyage. Our quote form collects everything in one pass.
How fast do I get my certificate?
Once your details are confirmed and payment is received, digital certificates are typically issued the same business day.
How do I verify a Barstoni marine certificate?
Use the Certificate Checker on this website. Enter the certificate number shown on the document and the system confirms its validity.
How do I report a claim?
Contact us immediately through the Claim Center page, by phone or by email. You will need your policy or certificate number, photos of the damage, the commercial invoice, the bill of lading, and where applicable a survey report and police abstract.
Which payment methods do you accept?
M-Pesa, VISA and MasterCard. Corporate clients may also arrange invoice terms with our team.
Do you handle imports from China?
Yes. Imports from China are our specialty, and we work with a preferred global logistics partner, CTS International Logistics Corporation Limited, for end-to-end cargo movement.
